To rank in Google Maps, claim and verify your Google Business Profile, choose the most specific primary category for your business, keep your name, address and phone number identical everywhere online, collect genuine reviews steadily, add photos and posts regularly, and support it all with a website that clearly states where you are and what you do. Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence, and every one of those steps feeds at least one of the three.
That is the short answer. The rest of this guide walks through each step for Indian owners of shops, clinics, showrooms, schools, restaurants and service businesses.
What the map pack is and why it matters
Search for "dentist near me" or "tiles shop in Kochi" and the first thing you usually see is not a normal website link. It is a map with three business listings under it, each showing a star rating, address and phone number. That block is the local pack, often called the map pack, and it sits above the ordinary blue links for most searches with local intent.
Because it appears first, the map pack takes a large share of clicks and calls for local searches, and the same signals decide how you rank when someone searches directly inside the Google Maps app. For many small businesses, being in that top three is worth more than any other channel.
The three factors Google uses for local rankings
Google describes three broad factors for local results, and everything else in this guide is a way of improving one of them.
- Relevance - how well your profile matches what the person searched for. Your categories, business description, services and website content all tell Google what you actually do.
- Distance - how far your location is from the searcher, or from the area they named. You cannot move your shop, but you can make sure Google knows your exact location and service area.
- Prominence - how well known and trusted your business appears to be. Reviews, mentions on directories and news sites, links to your website and general online activity all contribute.
Distance is largely fixed. Relevance and prominence are where your effort goes.
Step 1: Claim and verify your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the free listing that powers your appearance in Maps and the map pack. If you have not claimed it, nothing else on this list matters yet.
- Go to google.com/business and sign in with a Google account you control - not an account you might lose access to.
- Search for your business name. If a listing already exists, claim it. If not, create one.
- Enter your exact business name as it appears on your signboard, your precise address, phone number, website and hours.
- Complete verification. Google may offer a video verification (walking through your premises on camera), a phone call, or a postcard by post to your address. Follow whichever method is offered honestly - the address must be a real place where you operate.
- Once verified, fill in every section: description, hours, services, photos, attributes. Profiles that are complete tend to perform noticeably better than half-filled ones.
Step 2: Choose the right categories
The primary category is arguably the single most impactful field on your entire profile, and it is the one most businesses get wrong. Google uses it heavily to decide which searches you can appear for.
Be as specific as possible. A skin clinic should choose "Dermatologist", not "Doctor". A biryani restaurant should choose "Biryani restaurant" if it exists, not just "Restaurant". A CBSE school should choose the most precise school category available. There are thousands of categories, and the specific one almost always beats the generic one.
Then add secondary categories for the other things you genuinely do. A dental clinic might have "Dentist" as primary and "Dental implants provider" and "Orthodontist" as secondary. Do not add categories for services you do not offer. Clinics and hospitals have extra considerations around categories and content, which we cover in our guide to healthcare SEO.
Step 3: Keep your NAP consistent everywhere
NAP stands for name, address and phone. Google cross-checks your business details across the web, and every place your business is mentioned - your website, directories, social profiles - should show your name, address and phone written exactly the same way.
Pick one canonical format and stick to it. If your address is "2nd Floor, Trade Tower, MG Road, Kochi, Kerala 682016", do not write "II Floor, Trade Towers, M.G. Road, Ernakulam" somewhere else. Inconsistency does not get you penalised, but it dilutes Google's confidence that all those mentions refer to one single business, which weakens prominence.
Step 4: Build citations on Indian directories
A citation is any listing of your business name, address and phone on another website. For Indian businesses, the ones worth doing first are:
- Justdial - still one of the most visited local discovery platforms in India.
- IndiaMART - essential for manufacturers, wholesalers and B2B suppliers.
- Sulekha - strong for local services like tuition, repairs and events.
- Yellow Pages India and similar general directories.
- Industry-specific platforms - Practo for doctors and clinics, Zomato and Swiggy pages for restaurants, MagicBricks or Housing profiles for real estate, CollegeDunia or similar for institutes.
Use your exact canonical NAP on every one. A handful of accurate, well-maintained listings beats fifty sloppy ones.
Step 5: Earn reviews the right way
Reviews drive both prominence and the click itself - a 4.6-star business with 120 reviews gets chosen over a 3.9-star business with 8 reviews sitting right beside it.
Ask every happy customer at the natural moment: after the sale, the treatment, the delivery. Google provides a short review link in your profile dashboard - put it on your bill, send it on WhatsApp, print it as a QR code at the counter. Reply to every review, good and bad, politely and briefly.
Never buy reviews, and never offer discounts or gifts in exchange for them. Both violate Google's policies. Google's filters catch unnatural review patterns, and the outcomes range from deleted reviews to a suspended profile - which means disappearing from Maps entirely. Slow and genuine wins.
Step 6: Photos, posts, services and Q&A
Upload real photos: your shopfront, interior, team, products and work. Add new ones monthly - fresh photos signal an active business and give customers confidence.
Use Google Posts for offers, new arrivals, festival timings and announcements. Fill in the Services and Products sections with plain-language names and honest descriptions; these feed relevance for specific searches like "root canal treatment" or "vitrified tiles".
Watch the Q&A section on your profile. Anyone can ask a question there and anyone can answer, so seed it yourself with the questions customers actually ask - parking, payment methods, appointments - and answer them from your business account.
Step 7: Your website still matters for Maps
Google reads the website linked from your profile to confirm relevance and location. Even a modest site helps if it carries:
- Your canonical name, address and phone in the footer of every page.
- An embedded Google Map of your exact location.
- LocalBusiness schema markup - structured data that states your name, address, phone, hours and geo-coordinates in a format Google parses directly.
- A genuinely useful location page: directions and landmarks, parking information, photos, the services offered at that branch, and answers to common questions - not three thin paragraphs written only for Google.
If you do not have a website yet, or yours is outdated, see our website development page, and our SEO services page explains how on-page work and local optimisation fit together.
Multi-branch businesses: one profile per location
If you have three showrooms, you need three Google Business Profiles - one per physical location, each verified at its own address, with its own reviews, photos and location page on your website. Never create multiple profiles for one address to capture more map space; duplicates get merged or suspended.
How to measure results
The performance (insights) section of your Google Business Profile dashboard shows how many people saw your profile, the search terms they used, and how many called, asked for directions or clicked to your website. Watch calls and direction requests month over month - those actions become customers.
In Google Search Console, filter performance data for searches containing your city or "near me" phrases to see how your website itself is gaining local visibility. Expect gradual movement over two to three months rather than overnight jumps; local SEO compounds.
Common mistakes that hurt or get profiles suspended
- Keyword-stuffed business names - listing yourself as "Sharma Dental Clinic | Best Dentist in Kochi | Root Canal" violates Google's rules. Use your real name only; violations invite suspension.
- Fake addresses and virtual offices - creating listings at addresses where no staff actually works. These get removed, sometimes along with your genuine listing.
- Inconsistent call-tracking numbers - if you use a tracking number, set it as the primary number on the profile with your real line as additional, and keep it consistent; scattering different numbers across the web fragments your NAP.
- Duplicate profiles - old, unclaimed or accidental duplicates split your reviews and confuse Google. Find and merge or remove them.
- Letting the profile go stale - outdated hours, unanswered reviews and no new photos for a year all quietly erode trust with both Google and customers.
Your action checklist
- Claim and verify your Google Business Profile with an account you control.
- Set the most specific primary category, plus honest secondary categories.
- Fix one canonical name, address and phone format and use it everywhere.
- Complete every profile section: description, hours, services, products, attributes.
- List your business on Justdial, IndiaMART, Sulekha, Yellow Pages India and your industry platforms with identical NAP.
- Set up a review link and ask every satisfied customer; reply to all reviews.
- Upload fresh photos and publish a post at least monthly.
- Add your address, an embedded map and LocalBusiness schema to your website, and build a proper location page.
- Create one verified profile per branch if you have multiple locations.
- Review profile insights and Search Console monthly and adjust.
